In the fall of 2004, with another year to go in pre-production, the plan was for Ohkubo and the character designers to join Akamatsu and the animation producer and director Ken Otsuka to complete the series. Looking back at the first season, Ohkubo recalls that although it was well received it was not without its flaws.
We did everything but try to make it as authentic to the spirit of the original manga, something that a lot of the viewers really wanted to see. For example, when Shikamaru tries to use a pair of ninja pants, it doesn't feel like it does in the manga. It's too general, so I tried to show off the pants more. There were places where I thought I was just copying straight from Matsumoto's manga. I guess the fans just expected too much because the first season wasn't very good.
